In a heartwarming Instagram post on Tuesday, Australian football icon Sam Kerr and U.S. women’s national team player Kristie Mewis revealed that they are engaged. The announcement came as a pleasant surprise to fans around the world, who were thrilled to hear the happy news.
In an interview with People magazine on November 9th, Mewis confirmed the reports of her engagement to Kerr after months of speculation. She expressed her gratitude towards Kerr, stating that he has been an important figure in her life and has been there for her in every possible way.

Kerr’s proposal to Mewis was recently announced on Instagram, where the couple shared images with the caption “September 1st, 2023.”
Messages of congratulations poured in for Kerr’s latest achievement in the sporting world. The official accounts of the Women’s Super League (WSL) and the Australian women’s football team were quick to send their well-wishes. Other sporting personalities, including Kerr’s Chelsea teammates Fran Kirby and Millie Bright, as well as Australian cricketer David Warner, also joined in to offer their congratulations.
In August 2021, the couple announced their relationship to the public via an Instagram post.
Last year, Mewis expressed in an interview that simply being a couple of girls in love and existing openly can make a significant impact on others. She hopes that by doing so, they can positively influence at least a couple of individuals’ comfort levels and attitudes towards same-sex relationships. This, in turn, would mean a great deal to her.
Chelsea’s Kerr is considered a top player in women’s football and is currently aiming for her fourth consecutive WSL title. Meanwhile, Mewis, who played for the USWNT in the World Cup earlier this year, was a key player in Gotham FC’s victorious NWSL campaign.
