According to court documents obtained by WTOP, Officer John Bewley was taken into custody at approximately 3:30 a.m. on Saturday in the 1600 block of Connecticut Avenue NW. Assigned to the Special Operations Division, Bewley is an experienced department veteran with 11 years of service.

According to police, it appears that he stumbled upon a woman who was being pulled over by other officers for drunk driving. Initially, when the woman was stopped, she claimed that she was speaking with her boyfriend, who is a police officer in D.C.

Based on the court records, Bewley, who was not in his uniform, arrived at the location with his overhead lights on and instructed the female driver to leave. He was seen shouting at the suspect, urging her to depart with him, and disregarded the orders given by other officers to refrain from intervening.

After detecting a strong smell of alcohol on Bewley, the officers proceeded to ask him if he would agree to undergo a sobriety test. However, he declined the request and was subsequently taken into custody and handcuffed. The officer’s police powers were swiftly revoked by the internal affairs division, according to police. Police sources have reported that the D.C. police internal affairs are currently investigating the incident.
