One person is hospitalized as a result of gunfire in the Brighton neighborhood

A 19-year-old man was injured in a gunshot in Brighton on Wednesday night.

At 9:09 p.m., Brighton police were called to the 4000 block of Seventh Avenue.

When they arrived, they discovered a vehicle that had collided with a mailbox. According to police Lt. Kenneth Hooten, no one was inside the vehicle.

According to witnesses, four Black males jumped out of the vehicle. One of them dashed along the street, collapsing.

When Hooten arrived, he discovered the young man had been shot in the leg.

To stop the bleeding, Hooten, who is also the city’s assistant fire chief, used the victim’s belt as a tourniquet. In addition, he treated the wound until paramedics arrived.

The victim was brought to UAB Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

That shooting occurred shortly after another firearm incident in Brighton.

Shots were fired into a home on Council Avenue at 8:48 p.m. Officers were looking into that incident when they learned of the Seventh Avenue shooting.

Hooten believes the two shootings are related and may be tied to a previous incident on Smith Street.

Anyone with information should contact the Brighton Police Department at 205-425-8934, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office at 205-325-1450, or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
