Honoring Kelsey Nalepa: League City Dedicates Highway Sign To 8-Year-Old Victim Of Drunk Driving Accident

Mocobizscene-  In recognition of National Impaired Driving Prevention Month, KPRC 2’s Amy Davis and Haley Hernandez had the opportunity to interview a League City couple whose daughter tragically lost her life in a 2017 car accident caused by a drunk driver.

Kelsey Nalepa, who would have turned 15 years old this year and been a sophomore in high school, had her life tragically ended in a crash on April 6. Just two days after the accident, Kelsey passed away. Marcus Nalepa, Kelsey’s father, vividly remembered the day of the crash during an interview on KPRC 2+ Tuesday.

TxDOT’s Memorial Sign Program

Kelsey’s mother, Nicole, recently took the initiative to apply for a sign through TxDOT’s Memorial Sign Program. This program allows grieving families to acquire and install a special sign near the location of a tragic accident. With the sign now in place, it serves as a heartfelt tribute to honor Kelsey’s memory.

Nicole emphasized that the presence of the sign serves as a constant reminder to everyone. She explained, “We hope that by seeing the sign, it will make people pause and reconsider their choices, understanding the impact it can have on others. Additionally, it serves as a way to keep Kelsey’s name alive, reminding everyone that this tragic incident occurred in our own community, serving as a stark reminder that such events can happen anywhere.”

Marcus highlighted the significance of the memorial sign for both his family and the community.

Marcus expressed his hope that the sign would serve as a reminder to people who may become complacent in their daily lives. He believes that if the sign can help save even one life or prevent another family from going through the same tragedy, then it is undoubtedly worth it.

5K for Kelsey

Every year, in April, the community comes together for the 5K for Kelsey event. This event serves as a platform to raise funds for scholarships that benefit girls in the community. Moreover, it is at this event where the deserving recipients are recognized and awarded the scholarships.

According to Marcus, a total of twenty girls received valuable support at the beginning of their college journey.

The family wants to convey a message regarding the dangers of drunk driving during the holiday season.

Nicole emphasized the importance of making arrangements in advance for the holiday season. She highlighted that while it is a time to celebrate and spend time with loved ones, it is crucial not to drive under the influence. Nicole suggested using services like Uber or Lyft and recommended scheduling rides ahead of time to ensure a safe and convenient transportation option.

In connection to the crash, authorities have apprehended 41-year-old Erika Diebel, who now faces charges of intoxication manslaughter with a vehicle. Reports indicate that Diebel managed to secure her release by posting a $100,000 bond. It is worth noting that Diebel had previously received a 10-year probation sentence in 2019.
