Caleb White, a star basketball player at Pinson Valley High School, died after a medical problem at school

Caleb White, a senior at Pinson Valley High School and a talented basketball player passed away on Thursday after experiencing a medical emergency while at school.

Despite efforts to save him, White was pronounced dead at the hospital. The incident occurred in the late morning, and Principal Michael Turner shared the news with parents and the media.

Turner assured that counselling would be provided to students and staff who need it in the coming days.

White’s grandfather, George Varnadoe Jr., wrote on Facebook that the 17-year-old collapsed while working out with the team.

Varnadoe described White as an honour student, an excellent role model, and a phenomenal basketball player, ranked 25th best point guard in his class in the nation and No. 2 in the state of Alabama.

He closed his post with “RIP Caleb. I love you man.”

White was a standout athlete, having been a finalist for Class 6A Player of the Year as a junior and a first-team all-state selection.

He averaged 20.9 points, 3.8 rebounds, 3.1 assists, and 1.9 steals for the Indians. As a sophomore, he averaged 17.3 points, 3.3 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and had 71 steals. Just last month, White played in the North-South All-Star basketball game in Montgomery.

Pinson Mayor Joe Cochran expressed his condolences on Facebook, stating that no words could comfort a family and community experiencing the loss of a young life. He also remembered White as someone who carried a great spirit and encouraged others to enjoy every day as the treasure it is.

AHSAA executive director Alvin Briggs released a statement expressing sympathy to White’s family, classmates, basketball team, and extended school family. He noted that White was an outstanding student-athlete and role model. Social media tributes poured in from basketball coaches and programs across the state.
