Police Seek Two Suspects in Connection to Fatal Shooting of 35-Year-Old Man in Mt. Hope

The NYPD is seeking assistance from the public in identifying an individual in the attached photos. According to reports, the individual is one of two persons of interest that the police want to question regarding a murder that happened in the Mt. Hope area of The Bronx last month.

On Sunday, Oct. 1 at approximately 5:10 p.m., a male victim who was 35 years old was approached by two unknown individuals who acted together in the area of East 175th Street and Grand Concourse. The suspects shot the victim with a firearm, hitting him in the torso. The police reported this incident.

According to a police spokesperson, the suspects escaped on a scooter in an unknown direction. The victim was rushed to St. Barnabas Hospital by EMS but was declared dead upon arrival.

As per the NYPD’s latest crime statistics report, overall crime rates in New York City continue to decrease as October saw a decline in shootings and murders and an increase in arrests made across all seven major index crime categories. The police department reported an 8.1% decrease in shooting incidents in October 2023 compared to the same month in 2022, with only 79 incidents recorded as compared to 86. This sustained drop in shooting incidents adds to the already impressive 25.7% reduction in shootings experienced citywide year to date, with 839 incidents recorded this year compared to 1,129 during the same period last year.

According to the latest statistics, there has been a significant decrease in the number of shootings and murders in 2023 as compared to the previous year. The reports indicate that 384 fewer individuals have been shot year-to-date in 2023, while 45 fewer people have been murdered. These figures are crucial and highlight the positive impact of efforts made towards reducing violent crimes in the community.

The NYPD reported 361 arrests for gun possession in October 2023. These arrests contributed to a total of 3,735 gun-related arrests made throughout the year up to October. Furthermore, law enforcement officials confiscated 5,585 guns across all five boroughs in the same year. Since the beginning of the Adams administration, a total of 12,720 firearms have been seized, significantly reducing the number of guns on the streets and preventing them from falling into the hands of criminals.

According to the most recent statistics, the police commissioner expressed, “Our team at the NYPD is working closely with the community members in all five boroughs. Ensuring public safety is a collective responsibility that requires everyone in every neighborhood to contribute. This approach is vital in maintaining minimal levels of crime and diminishing violence and chaos throughout our wonderful city.”

As of November 5th, there has been a significant decrease in year-to-date shootings in the Bronx. The boroughwide shootings have reduced by 19.8%, with 283 incidents in 2023 compared to 353 in 2022. Moreover, the number of year-to-date shooting victims has also dropped by 18.3%, with 340 victims in 2023 compared to 416 in 2022.

The central part of the western Bronx, which includes Fordham, University Heights, Morris Heights, and Mt. Hope, falls under the jurisdiction of the 46th Precinct. This is where the shooting incident referred to earlier took place. Unfortunately, year-to-date shootings in this precinct have gone up by 28.1%, with 41 incidents reported in 2023 compared to 32 incidents in 2022.

As of November 5, there has been a 44.4% increase in the number of shooting victims in this precinct year-to-date. This year, there have been 52 shooting victims compared to 36 in the same period last year. Recently, there have been reports of two shootings in Mt. Hope – one resulting in a fatality, and the other being non-fatal.
