Friday at the Newark Beth Israel Medical Center in New Jersey, two nurses and one medical resident were injured in a stabbing incident that ensued after a domestic dispute with visitors in the pediatric intensive care unit.
News 12 New Jersey reports that hospital officials stated the three employees sustained lacerations and were transported to the on-site emergency department with minor injuries. No patients or members of their families were injured in the assault.
Officials report that at approximately 7:00 a.m. on Friday, a woman identified as 37-year-old Firdousi A. Abdul-Hakim allegedly attacked the staff.
Reportedly infuriated by employees’ remark that there were an excessive number of guests, the woman retrieved a cutting implement, which she subsequently employed to initiate her assault.
Abdul-Hakim was ultimately apprehended and is currently being held in detention on a variety of charges, including unlawful possession of a weapon and aggravated assault, according to Fritz Fragé, director of public safety in Newark.
The hospital issued an update at approximately 4:00 p.m., stating that all three injured staff members had been discharged from the emergency department.
On Friday morning, the hospital was placed under divert status, which prohibited the admission of new ambulances during the emergency. However, the status was subsequently lifted, and regular operations resumed.
The police in Newark continue their investigation into the incident.
