Georgia College Basketball Star Shot And Killed At DC Bus Stop

AUGUSTA, GA — The day after Christmas in Washington, DC, a former standout basketball player for Augusta University was shot and died, according to police.

On December 26, Tyvez Monroe was shot and died outside a train station in the Washington, DC, region, according to WJBF-TV. Deonte Spicer reportedly approached Monroe about 4:30 in the morning while he was seated at a bus stop outside the metro station, according to WRC-TV.

The TV station said that Spicer allegedly pulled out an AR-15 and shot Monroe after they exchanged fist bumps and spoke for a short while. Spicer then boarded a bus at a nearby bus stop. Eventually, according to WJBF, Spicer was taken into custody by the police and accused of first-degree murder.

Over the weekend, Rickey Cruse, the grandfather of Monroe, attended a vigil in the Washington, DC, region, and recalled his grandson as always being the peacekeeper. There was never a conflict, according to Cruse. Never got into any altercations. Not at all like that. He constantly attempted to defuse tense situations.

“You know, he was well-liked by many people,” Darryl Monroe, his father, remarked during the vigil. “He had a kind heart.” He enjoyed basketball, sports, and the community.

Before graduation in 2019, Monroe scored over 1,000 points for the Augusta University Jaguars, according to WJBF.

One of the most competitive athletes I’ve ever coached, Monroe, passed away far too soon, according to a post made on X by his former coach, Dip Metress.The police have not disclosed a reason for the shooting, but Spicer’s strange actions are highlighted in court records that WRC was able to get. The police informed the TV station that they are investigating his mental state.

Monroe’s funeral will take place on January 13 at 10 a.m. at Shiloh Baptist Church in Alexandria, Virginia.
