According to the Metropolitan Police Department, the suspect is 5 feet, 6 inches tall and was dressed in black clothing, including a black ski mask. The individual was observed leaving the scene on foot.

According to FOX 5, there were also reports of several stabbings, a separate shooting, and three armed robberies on New Year’s Day. Washington, D.C. ranked fifth in terms of murder rate among the largest cities in the country last year, with the number of homicides reaching its highest level in 23 years.

In 2023, the District witnessed a significant rise in crime rates. Data released by the city indicates that there were 274 reported homicides, marking a 35% increase compared to the previous year. Carjackings almost doubled, while car thefts saw an alarming 83% surge. The overall incidence of violent crime rose by nearly 40% throughout the year.

A shooting incident in Washington, DC has resulted in the loss of two lives and left two others injured in the vicinity of Nationals Park. Washington, D.C., Councilmember Matt Frumin emphasized that addressing gun violence should be the topmost concern for public officials.

“Earlier today, a tragic incident unfolded at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Friendship Heights, where a group of friends had gathered. Shockingly, one of the individuals at the gathering fired a fatal shot, resulting in the untimely death of a young woman. My deepest condolences go out to her grieving family and friends, who are now forced to endure the loss of their loved one instead of joyfully welcoming the New Year,” expressed Frumin. He further revealed that his office had promptly reached out to the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) following the shooting.”

Councilmember Frumin has recently announced that he will be organizing a public safety forum on January 17th at 6 p.m. The forum will take place at the Cleveland Park Library and will feature esteemed guests such as Washington, D.C. Police Chief Pamela Smith, U.S. Attorney Matthew Graves, and Attorney General Brian Schwalb. This event aims to address and discuss important matters concerning public safety in the community.

“I am confident that the MPD is taking all necessary steps to apprehend the shooter,” he stated. “Our city is plagued by an epidemic of gun violence that affects every resident, regardless of age, income, or ward.
