Family of New Orleans mother killed in Detroit murder-suicide speaks out

Mocobizscene- The family members of a woman who was tragically killed by her ex-boyfriend in a Detroit murder-suicide earlier this month have announced that she will be laid to rest in her hometown of New Orleans on Thursday.

Brittanie St. Ann, 33, was identified as the victim in a domestic hostage situation that took place late on New Year’s Day on Detroit’s west side. Throughout the incident, her two daughters remained outside in a vehicle.

According to Erikka Hall, St. Ann had been in a relationship with Jonathan Wilson for ten years and had held various jobs such as a teacher, nursing assistant, and truck driver.

According to Hall, the situation was characterized by active and inactive periods, but overall, it was more active than inactive. Brittanie’s two daughters, aged 11 and 17, anxiously waited in the car for their mother to come out of their house.

A go-getter

St. Ann, born in New Orleans in 1990 and raised in the 7th Ward, was often described by her mother as bubbly, goofy, and outspoken.

She grew up as the eldest of six siblings, constantly moving between New Orleans, Detroit, and Austin. After years of navigating different cities, she finally obtained her GED from the Jefferson Parish school system in 2007.

After obtaining her certification as a nursing assistant, she dedicated her time to providing home health aid services. Additionally, she gained valuable experience working as a teaching assistant for special needs children at Walter G. Schneckenburger Elementary School in Kenner. However, her career took a different turn as she embarked on a new journey as a semi-truck driver.

“Taking care of her girls without having to choose between paying bills or buying a pair of shoes was something she cherished,” her mother remarked. “However, she also felt torn because it meant she had less time to spend with her beloved daughters, with whom she shared a strong bond.”

In 2019, Brittanie decided to pursue higher education while also securing a job as a dental assistant. However, she soon realized that the pay in Detroit was significantly higher compared to New Orleans. This realization prompted her to take a leap of faith and venture out on her own.

According to Zelia, the woman was a go-getter who had no qualms about the type of work she took on.

She first crossed paths with Wilson in 2013 when a childhood friend introduced them in Detroit. Over time, she tirelessly tried to include him in every new professional opportunity that came her way. Unfortunately, despite her best efforts, he struggled to find stable employment.

Zelia St. Ann remarked that Brittanie was attempting to heal someone who was shattered. She acknowledged that when one realizes that a person is detrimental to someone else, the individual in question is usually aware of it. However, the decision to sever ties must be made when they are ready.

As the new year arrived, she felt that it was the perfect time for her daughter to embark on a new journey.

On December 31, Brittanie appeared glowing with her newly-styled hair while engaging in a delightful Facetime conversation. They discussed Brittanie’s daughter’s upcoming graduation and college aspirations, as well as their plans for a trip to New Orleans for Mardi Gras and a family cruise.

Her mother fondly reminisced, “She declared, ‘This year will be a remarkable one. It symbolizes fresh starts for my daughters and me.’ She always strived to find the positive in everyone. She wholeheartedly devoted her life to her precious girls.”

The burial ceremony for Brittanie St. Ann is scheduled to take place at 9 a.m. on Thursday at Professional Funeral Services, located at 1449 N. Claiborne Avenue.
