Bears Swim Over Mississippi River For New Territory

Mocobizscene- There are more bears in Mississippi than there used to be, especially black bears.

Anthony Ballard, head of the Mississippi Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Bear Program, claims that bears are crossing the Mississippi River by swimming from Louisiana and Arkansas into Mississippi.

Ballard stated that because of the dense population in nearby states, bears are relocating to discover fresh area.

“We have seen deer studies that deer cross it pretty frequently, and bears,” Ballard stated. “You know most large animals don’t have much of a problem crossing back and forth, pretty much as they please.”

According to Ballard, market hunting and timber harvesting caused the state’s bear population to decline in the early 1900s. According to Ballard, laws implemented in the 1930s have contributed to the stability of the bear population in Mississippi.
