A California man was accused of hurling concrete fragments and yelling racist epithets at Hispanic street sellers last month, and he was charged with a hate crime on Monday.
Following the incident on November 1, Emanuel Gulakian, 36, has been charged with assault, battery, and hate crimes, according to the authorities.
At approximately 11:45 p.m., Glendale police reported that Gulakian had reportedly “unleashed a barrage” of profanities and racial slurs on the victims, all of whom were Hispanic.
“The suspect then found pieces of concrete in the area and began throwing them at the victims,” according to the police, and that “some of the concrete pieces were as big as softballs.”
A chunk of concrete struck one victim, however they only claimed minor wounds.
After locating and apprehending the offender, the officers collaborated with the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office to initiate legal proceedings.
“The Glendale Police Department reaffirms its commitment to upholding justice and ensuring the safety and well-being of all community members,” it said.
“Acts of hate and violence have no place in our city or our society, and we remain steadfast in our efforts to foster an environment of inclusivity and respect for all.”
