According to the Montgomery Police, three white men who were involved in a violent altercation at a riverfront dock in Alabama have been issued arrest warrants. The incident, which was captured on video, has gained widespread attention.
Police Chief Darryl Albert made an announcement on Tuesday, August 8th, stating that Richard Roberts, who is 48 years old, along with Alan Todd and Zachary Shipman, both of whom are white, are being charged with third-degree assault following a viral brawl. This information was reported by TMZ.
According to Albert, one of the perpetrators has already been apprehended, while the remaining two are anticipated to surrender themselves for booking and processing.
As per footage of the incident, a huge fight broke out on Saturday (August 5) at Riverfront Park in Montgomery when a white assailant assaulted a Black security guard on the dock. The videos reveal that the security guard and the attacker engaged in a physical altercation before two other white men jumped into the fray.
In the videos, there was a moment where the security guard was knocked down and attacked by multiple men. Fortunately, some bystanders came to his aid and even went to the extent of swimming to the dock to confront the attackers. It was heartening to see people stepping up to protect someone who was being unfairly targeted.
There were several fights that broke out on the dock and as per Albert’s statement on Tuesday, 13 individuals were taken into custody, interrogated and then set free after the altercation.
The police are still investigating the incident and no charges have been made yet. The suspect, Reggie Gray, was seen hitting people with a chair and could be facing charges in the future, according to Albert.
The chief mentioned that Montgomery Police are currently seeking guidance from the FBI regarding potential hate crime charges.
