MADISON COUNTY, Ala. — The National Weather Service in Huntsville, Alabama, has stated that an EF-1 tornado hit the Hampton Cove area on Friday night.
The strongest winds of the storm were thought to reach about 93 mph. The tornado’s path was about 7.1 miles long, and it was 50 yards wide.
The National Weather Service says that the tornado happened in Hampton Cove along Paul Drive off of Old Big Cove Road, northwest of Highway 431 South. As it crossed Highway 431 at the Hampton Cove Cemetery, it went south and east.
The tornado then moved southeast and crossed parts of the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Hampton Cove as it got close to Old Highway 431. As the tornado got closer to Old Highway 431 on its way to Cherry Tree Rd., it kept moving south and east through mostly country areas.
At these ball fields, trees were knocked down before the storm got stronger as it got closer to homes further down Cherry Tree Road. At this site, trees fell on the house and broke off near their bases, which caused damage to the house.
At this spot, the tornado was at its strongest, with winds of 93 mph and a 50-yard width as it snapped trees about two to five feet from their bases.
From this point, south and east, the tornado broke a few trees along Cherry Tree Road as it went along Goose Creek. The last damage that was seen was near where Cherry Tree Road and Old Gurley Pike meet.
Since the road network ended and trees may have fallen on the ridge to the north of this spot, more satellite data may be needed to get an official endpoint.
