A man from Decatur is accused of setting fire to his wife

DECATUR, Ala. —  Authorities say a man from northern Alabama is accused of setting fire to his wife and their apartment early Tuesday.

According to Morgan County Sheriff’s Office online booking records, Riley Herbert Willis III, 40, of Decatur, is charged with first-degree domestic abuse, assault, and arson.

Officers from the Decatur Police Department responded to a complaint of a burn victim at Summer Courtyard Apartments in Decatur, according to WAAY-TV. Decatur Fire & Rescue and Decatur-Morgan Emergency Medical Services also rushed to the area at 3:30 a.m. CDT, according to the television station.

According to AL.com, officials discovered a woman with “serious physical injuries” and burns. According to the news outlet, Willis allegedly set his wife on fire and then burnt the flat with an accelerant before leaving through a back window.

Riley was caught hiding inside another apartment within the complex moments later, according to WHNT-TV.

According to the news station, the victim was brought to UAB Hospital and was listed in critical condition.

Willis is being held without bail at the Morgan County Jail, according to online booking records.
