A 19-year-old was arrested after a 4-year-old child suffered injuries in a shooting in Smithfield

On July 6, 2023, a shooting incident in Birmingham’s Smithfield Community left a 4-year-old child injured. But now, the Birmingham Police Department has made an arrest in the case.

They have identified the suspect as 19-year-old Taniyah Lowery and have obtained a warrant for her arrest. The Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office has since received the case details and has successfully arrested Lowery.

She’s now facing charges of Assault 2nd Degree and has been detained in the Jefferson County Jail since July 25, 2023. The shooting itself occurred at an apartment in the Smithfield Housing Community.

When the authorities arrived, they found a 4-year-old girl with a gunshot wound. Thankfully, a local resident had alerted the police, so the child was quickly transported to Children’s Hospital. The initial investigation shows that at least one other individual was present in the apartment during the shooting.

The police have confirmed that no gunfire came from outside the apartment. The detectives are still trying to determine if the shooting was accidental. The Birmingham Police Department is still investigating the case, and they’ll share additional updates as they become available.
