The shooting occurred just before 5 p.m. Monday, April 12, 2021, at Country Park Apartments on the 1100 block of Florentine Circle.

Deputies from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office were summoned to the complex in eastern Jefferson County to investigate allegations of shots fired.

Deputies were told moments later that the driver of a Cadillac vehicle had waved down Birmingham police on Wear Drive, across from Huffman High School. According to the driver, they were the target of the shooting at Florentine Circle, and one of the passengers, Lawrence, was hit.

McCarter-Craig was charged with murder at first and released on bond. Prosecutors said he walked out of Walmart without paying for more than $1,500 in merchandise, for which he was charged with theft of property, a violation of his bond condition of not committing any new offences.

Later, a Jefferson County grand jury indicted him on capital murder charges.
