Dustin Burbage arrested and charged with attempted murder

Shots were fired and a Brantley man was taken into custody Saturday after a night of celebration.

Dustin Lee Burbage, who is 40 years old, was arrested Saturday night by the Crenshaw County Sheriff’s Department. He is being charged with attempted murder because he caused trouble at a wedding party at Barns and Bins Wedding and Event Venue near Luverne.

Sheriff’s Investigator Chris Stewart said that around 8:40 p.m., police got a call about a fight at the wedding party of a couple from the Honoraville area.

“We received the call at 8:40 p.m. on July 8,” Steward said. “When the initial deputy arrived on the scene, it was a bit chaotic. Being a wedding party, there were beverages consumed. Once he got everything settled down he requested I come out and help. We began gathering statements from witnesses. An arrest was made on Dustin Burbage of Brantley for attempted murder.”

Burbage was charged after shooting at a wedding guest. Witness accounts show that Burbage was not a wedding guest. Instead, he went to the scene to help a wedding guest with her broken-down car.

“He was approached by some of the wedding guests about his behavior and how fast he pulled into [the venue],” Stewart said. “According to wedding guests, he drove in very recklessly. He was later approached by some of the individuals who asked him to calm down and leave. He then brandished a firearm, began waving it around and pointing at everyone.”

In witness statements, individuals are described as encouraging Burbage to put away his weapon and flee the scene. Eventually, he fired his gun at a person, but that person was not injured.

“Luckily, the bullet struck the ground,” Stewart said. “Based on witness statements, we contacted the district attorney’s office. That’s when we made the charge of attempted murder. He was booked into the county jail that night.”

There were rumours going around the neighbourhood about property damage and fights. Stewart said that those rumours were not true.

Stewart said, “Burbage drove around the whole place.” “Recent rain made the ground soft, so when he drove around, he made some ruts in the yard, but there was no damage. The groom’s brother was trying to get him away from the situation, and he broke one pane of glass in the process. I think the wedding party took care of and paid for the damage that night. There was no damage that could be considered a crime, and no one got hurt.”

Crenshaw County Sheriff Terry Mears said that officers and investigators went to the scene, calmed things down, took statements, and then made the arrest.

“I started up that way,” Mears said. “But deputies had everything under control.”

The owner of the venue, Stacey Jayroe Jones, wouldn’t talk about what happened because the investigation is still going on.

“Barns and Bins is unable to comment on an ongoing investigation,” Jones said.

According to Stewart, the incidence was isolated.

“This was an isolated incident,” Stewart said. “This is a venue, not a bar or anything like that. This is a one-time deal for the [wedding] family as well.”

The post-Dustin Burbage was taken into custody and charged with trying to kill someone who first appeared in Luverne Journal.
