Tuscaloosa: police arrest man in recent string of vehicle break-ins

TUSCALOOSA, AL – A significant update on the string of car break-ins in Tuscaloosa. Officers have made an arrest following the burglary of multiple cars at businesses along McFarland Boulevard. Tuscaloosa police say they found the man they were looking for in connection with car break-ins on McFarland Boulevard Wednesday afternoon.

Tavares McKinstry, 46, is accused of at least five vehicle break-ins, according to police. The most recent incident involved two cars in the Fresh Market parking lot.

Investigators say they don’t believe McKinstry is involved in the sting of vehicles smashed into at two apartment complexes since the leads so far point to different people being guilty. Officers say that McKinstry wanted money.

“Just for money. He was looking for money, looking for goods. He was mostly looking for purses, credit cards. He was trying to find shoppers going into businesses who were leaving behind purses and those sort of things,” said Lt. Donny Emerson.

The significant break in this case, according to Emerson, was surveillance video collected from one of the shops along McFarland. According to Lt. Emerson, it’s unclear whether any of the victims’ personal possessions will be returned.

According to Tuscaloosa County court records, Tavares McKinstry is still in the county jail as of this writing.
