John Carroll “Alabama Judge” passed away

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.  – Beck Taylor, the president of Samford University, said that Judge John L. Carroll passed away on Monday.

“Judge Carroll was a beloved colleague and friend,” Taylor wrote on social media. “Prayers extend to Susan and the entire family.”

Rep. Neil Rafferty also wrote on his Facebook page that he was sorry for what happened.

“Devastated to hear that Judge John Carroll—Marine, law school dean, and compassionate friend, and passionate advocate for justice for all—has passed away,” he wrote. “Semper fi, Judge.”

From 1986 to 2001, Carroll was a United States Magistrate Judge in the Middle District of Alabama. Then, from 2001 to 2014, he was the head of Samford’s Cumberland School of Law.

He taught law at Cumberland School of Law for the rest of his life. He taught mediation, evidence, legal practice, ethics, and an online course on e-discovery and evidence.

Carroll got his bachelor’s degree from Tufts University and his J.D. and LL.M. degrees in law from Cumberland School of Law and Harvard University, respectively.
