Mocobizscene- Last weekend, authorities in the capital city of Texas reported that a woman from California found herself in legal trouble when she attempted to leave Texas hastily. What made matters worse was that she had stolen a car from an Uber driver to make her getaway.
Neusha Afkami, a 27-year-old, is facing charges of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and credit or debit card abuse, as stated in the court records of Travis County, as reviewed by Law&Crime. The defendant faces two alleged counts that are classified as “state jail felonies” in Texas, which can result in a maximum jail sentence of two years.
According to an arrest affidavit obtained by local Fox affiliate KTBC, the incident took place sometime in the midnight hour on Dec. 10. According to the Austin Police Department, Afkami, a resident of Orange County, California, was collected from her hotel by an Uber driver at 12:28 a.m. Her intended destination was Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, located in the southeastern area of the city.
According to the affidavit, the ride-share driver, whose identity remains undisclosed, claimed that Afkami became more agitated about her driving speed, stating that she was going too slow. The defendant purportedly expressed frustration that the journey to the airport was taking too long.
According to the affidavit, Afkami allegedly snatched the Uber driver’s phone from her hand and discarded it out of the window in the vicinity of East Cesar Chavez Street, a busy road near Airport Boulevard. Subsequently, when the driver halted the vehicle to retrieve her phone, Afkami exited the passenger seat, assumed control of the wheel, and departed, leaving the driver stranded.
According to police, Afkami is accused of using the driver’s credit card to purchase approximately $120 at a store located within the small Austin airport. Neusha Afkami was featured alongside a picture of Southwest Airlines at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.
The driver retrieved her phone from the side of the road and promptly dialled the police for assistance. The authorities at the airport were promptly notified of the incident and swiftly apprehended Afkami before she could board her flight. During the subsequent questioning, the accused supposedly openly confessed to engaging in a heated argument with the driver regarding the duration of the journey.
Afkami reportedly confessed to taking the car but presented her vehicle use as a sort of agreement between the two. According to officers, she explained to her driver, “I need to get to the airport, so I’m going to take your car and drop it off at Southwest Airlines.”
The 2016 Chevrolet Cruz, a car, was found parked near a terminal. According to the police, Afkami was found in possession of all the items bought with the Uber driver’s card at the time of her arrest. These purchases made at the airport included candy and a shot glass.
The defendant has hired a lawyer. Law&Crime contacted her defense attorney for a comment on this story, but no response was received at the time of publication. Afkami faced a short period of detention in Travis County Jail until she managed to post a $10,000 bond. Her court appearance is scheduled for January 9th.
