Three Murders Raise Concerns Ahead Of Bayou Classic Weekend

Less than 12 hours after addressing holiday weekend safety concerns, Mayor Cantrell’s words were put to the test when the New Orleans Police Department responded to three separate shooting incidents. Two of these shootings occurred on Canal Street, a popular tourist destination, and were only blocks apart from each other. The incidents took place on Wednesday night, November 22nd.

Mayor Latoya Cantrell states that the city will have a dedicated team on the ground to ensure its safety, indicating that the city will be actively engaged.

As fans gear up for the Bayou Classic on Saturday, Nov. 25, they are also taking caution following the recent news of shootings in the city. People are beginning to settle in for the event, but with a sense of awareness and safety in mind.

Margaret Keenan, a tourist, shares her thoughts on the safety concerns in the UK. According to her, due to the absence of visible crime in the UK, people tend to be cautious when they find themselves in a crime-prone area. Margaret admits that she has had to cross the street a few times to avoid suspicious individuals, but this is a common practice in London. She emphasizes that it’s important to take necessary precautions to avoid unforeseen harm, even if it means avoiding someone who seems suspicious.

Denise Joseph hails from the vibrant city of New Orleans. According to her, the frequent incidents of shootings in the area indicate a pressing requirement for increased manpower on the streets, especially during events like Bayou Classic. As a result, she frequently advises tourists to exercise caution and remain vigilant of their surroundings.

According to Joseph, when it comes to tourists visiting New Orleans, he prefers to advise them to prioritize their safety rather than discourage them from enjoying the city. He acknowledges that people come to New Orleans to have fun and enjoy themselves, and so he advises them to seek directions from the police if they need help. Joseph believes that this is a more effective approach than trying to prevent tourists from having a good time.

A tourist shared that the recent shootings serve as a reminder for her to be cautious about her surroundings. However, she expressed that she is not concerned about the overall crime situation.

According to Walford, visiting New Orleans means embracing its edginess. As she strolls around the city, she acknowledges that everyone else is doing the same. Despite this, she hasn’t felt any sense of danger, which suggests that she’s doing something right.
