A Rock Island mother is in recovery after nearly losing both of her legs.
On November 15, Carmen Cabalerro-Anderson was injured in an accident at the Family Dollar store located on 11th Street in Rock Island. “I had my right leg flexed and against the wall,” stated Cballero-Anderson. “When your instructors instruct you to sit Indian-style, I positioned my leg behind the wall in that manner.”
Cabalerro-Anderson is recuperating in an Iowa City hospital following the tragedy. She stated, “My right leg is the worst leg.” “Three surgeries left no viable tissue remaining on the leg.” Both ankles are severely injured; pins are embedded in them. The right leg possesses a healthy shinbone and tendon, but the tendon is not protected by anything.
Cabalerro-Anderson reported that bystanders and Family Dollar employees assisted in staunching the hemorrhaging from her legs until paramedics arrived. She stated, “A gentleman was attempting to staunch the blood by placing a blanket over my leg.” “An additional individual was attempting to contact my mother.” A woman accompanied my eight-year-old child back to the parking lot with the intention of engaging her in some activity. All of them were bystanders. “Another gentleman had bestowed upon me a tourniquet belt.”
Despite enduring significant suffering, Cabalerro-Anderson has maintained an optimistic outlook on her road to recovery. “I approached the individual at Family Dollar, where the incident transpired,” said Dorothy Cotton, a close friend of the family. “While speaking with her on the phone, her optimistic demeanor caused him to begin sobbing. He remarked, “That woman is superhuman.” “She was yelling for her children when the accident occurred; she was not screaming for herself.”
Cabalerro-Anderson predicts that she will require a wheelchair for some time. “My family and children are at home; all I have to do is return to them,” she explained. “They inspire and motivate me.”
