The most significant danger posed by an imminent powerful storm is the potential for destructive winds, which have the potential to result in power outages. According to the National Weather Service, a massive system is expected to move in on Sunday, December 10th, and continue into Monday, December 11th.
Widespread wind gusts reaching speeds of 40 to 50 miles per hour are forecasted for Sunday and Monday, December 11. In areas further east, stronger gusts of up to 60 miles per hour are expected, while along the New England coast, gusts could reach up to 70 mph. In the areas shaded in a darker green, we can expect to receive the highest amounts of rainfall. According to the National Weather Service, the excessive runoff can lead to the flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone areas. They also mention that flooding is possible in poor drainage and urban areas.
On Saturday, December 9th, the day before the storm hits, the temperature is expected to reach the mid-50s with partly sunny skies. The weather on Sunday is expected to be mostly cloudy and breezy all day. There is a possibility of rainfall starting in the early afternoon.
The storm system is expected to bring the heaviest rainfall and strongest wind gusts on Sunday evening and throughout the night into Monday. By Monday afternoon, the system is expected to move out of the area. According to AccuWeather.com, delays may occur for both road and air travelers, even in regions where there is no rainfall or snowfall.
