A mental health breakdown led to the arrest of the mother of a 5-year-old boy who was found stabbed on Monday afternoon. The mother is now facing charges of attempted murder. Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens II reported the arrest of Symona McGhee, 29, from Newark, after a boy was discovered stabbed inside a home in the Lincoln Park neighborhood on Murray Street.
Authorities pressed multiple charges against McGhee, including unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, endangering the welfare of a child, and attempted murder. According to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, McGhee was experiencing a “mental health breakdown” during the stabbing incident. Currently, she is under observation at University Hospital in Newark.

McGhee expressed on her Facebook page that she has an unbreakable bond with her son Gajuan Jr. whom she loves with all her heart. Stephens reported that as of Tuesday evening, the boy’s condition remained critical but stable.
