Mocobizscene- A man from Northeast D.C. has pleaded guilty on Monday to firing 14 rounds at a Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) officer, according to DC News Now.
On August 1, 2023, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Saeve Edward Evans, a 37-year-old individual, was walking a dog outside in the 1700 block of Benning Rd., NE at approximately 5:25 a.m. During this time, an individual approached the building when Evans retrieved a gun, aimed it towards the sky, and discharged three rounds into the air.
The individual fled from the scene.
While responding to the report of gunshots, an MPD officer was dispatched to the scene where they spotted Evans on the sidewalk, in close proximity to a three-story apartment building. In a dangerous turn of events, Evans proceeded to aim the gun at the officer and fired three shots before advancing towards the entrance of the apartment.
Taking cover behind his cruiser, the officer swiftly returned fire.
Fortunately, the shooting did not cause any harm to the officer.
More officers arrived at the scene to provide assistance. They entered the building and discovered Evans on the third-floor landing. Evans, before being arrested, made a statement saying, “There is no gun, I removed it from my possession.”
During their search, authorities discovered a firearm at the location, and further investigation revealed that the gun was linked to Evans through DNA evidence. It was determined that Evans had stolen the gun from Texas on March 9, 2023.
MPD Chief Pamela Smith emphasized the daily sacrifices made by officers to maintain the safety of the city. She expressed her concern over Mr. Evans’ actions, highlighting the potential danger it posed to both the officer and the community. Chief Smith expressed relief that no one was harmed and commended Mr. Evans for taking responsibility by pleading guilty.
Evans admitted his guilt for assaulting a police officer while being armed and possessing a firearm and ammunition illegally, as a person previously convicted of a crime punishable by imprisonment for more than a year.
The sentencing for his case has been scheduled for May 22, 2024. Evans could potentially be sentenced to a minimum of five years in prison for the offense of assaulting a police officer while being armed.
