Mocobizscene- CNN reported that the United States experienced a record-breaking surge in COVID-19 cases last week. According to data from Johns Hopkins University, the country saw over 500,000 new cases in a single week, surpassing the previous record set in January. This increase in cases is largely driven by the highly transmissible Delta variant, which now accounts for the majority of new infections. Experts warn that the situation could worsen in the coming weeks as the variant continues to spread and more people remain unvaccinated.
Maine authorities have confiscated over 4,760 marijuana plants and apprehended three individuals from New York in Somerset County. This marks their third operation in a span of two weeks targeting suspected illegal marijuana cultivation sites.
According to a news release from the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office, law enforcement officers discovered more than $7,000 in suspected illicit drug proceeds, as well as a Toyota Tacoma truck and other items related to illicit drugs, during their search of the Skowhegan residence on Friday morning.
The sheriff’s office announced that three Brooklyn residents, aged between 56 and 61, were apprehended at their residence on charges of trafficking in scheduled drugs and cultivating marijuana.
According to Sheriff Dale Lancaster, all three individuals were initially incarcerated in the Somerset County Jail. However, they have since been able to post bail.
According to a Facebook post by the sheriff’s office, two previous searches in the “ongoing investigation into illegal marijuana plant growing operations” in Somerset County resulted in the seizure of more than 1,900 live plants and over 60 pounds of marijuana. It is worth noting that no arrests were made during those searches.
According to the sheriff’s office, they have recently executed at least six search warrants and made four arrests for suspected operation of illegal marijuana cultivation sites.
According to Maine’s Office of Cannabis Policy, individuals who are 21 years old and above have the legal right to purchase cannabis from licensed stores. Moreover, they are allowed to possess a maximum of 2.5 ounces of cannabis products.
The sheriff’s office, along with the Waterville Police Department, Homeland Security Investigations, and the Drug Enforcement Administration, conducted a search warrant on the suspected illegal marijuana grow site on Friday.
According to the release, the suspects are set to make their first court appearance on June 5.
