Indiana man sentenced to time served for possession of methamphetamine

Mocobizscene- A man from Crown Point, Indiana has been offered an opportunity to confront his drug addiction issue, despite the looming possibility of a nine-year prison term in Indiana..

Ryan Roger Myers, a 44-year-old resident of Crown Point, Indiana, has pleaded guilty to possessing methamphetamine. As a result, he has been sentenced to three years of probation. Myers will receive credit for the 171 days he has already served and will be required to complete the Adult Treatment Court and Twin County Probation programs. In addition, he will be responsible for paying $2,628 in fines and costs.

On September 13, 2023, near Edwardsburg, an incident took place involving Myers. He attempted to evade the Indiana police and ended up crossing into Michigan. Upon stopping him, the police discovered methamphetamine and a pipe in his car.

According to defense attorney Robert Drake, Myers is seeking assistance for his addiction. However, he is aware that he might be sent back to Indiana for a prison sentence. Drake expressed concern about the recommendation of a nine-year prison term in Indiana, which complicates the situation.

“We cannot anticipate Indiana’s course of action, and that is the main concern here,” Drake remarked. “Mr. Myers has expressed some reasons for optimism, hoping that Indiana will grant him an opportunity for probation. He desires the chance to participate in the ATC program. Otherwise, the Indiana sentence would overshadow the one in Michigan.”

Judge Herman chose to offer Myers the chance to be placed on probation instead of sentencing him to prison in Michigan. In his remarks, the judge emphasized that at the age of 44, Myers should be at a point in his life where he is able to overcome his drug addiction. He firmly stated, “It’s not a matter of if you’re going to get caught, but when.”

The judge offered the opportunity, acknowledging that it may or may not be realized. “If Elkhart decides to send you to prison, it would violate your probation here,” the judge explained. “And if you violate our program, you could end up serving prison sentences in both states, possibly consecutively. Taking this matter seriously is crucial, as it could potentially add more prison time on top of what you already face.”
