Mocobizscene- In a touching tribute, a firefighter’s extraordinary bravery was celebrated during a special ceremony in Warwick on Tuesday. The firefighter’s heroic actions involved rescuing three individuals from a devastating head-on collision engulfed in flames.
Kevin Colomba, a Warwick Fire Department Captain and Port Authority Police Officer, was on his way home from work in New York City last October when he witnessed the unexpected.
In the Town of Tuxedo, officials have reported that he immediately recognized the precarious situation three victims were facing. They were trapped in their vehicles and required urgent assistance. According to Sen. James Skoufis, he acted without hesitation and selflessness.
Skoufis presented Colomba with the prestigious New York State Senate Liberty Medal during a ceremony held at the Warwick Fire Department on Church Street. A gathering of firefighters attended the event, as well as Colomba’s family and friends. The Liberty Medal, the highest recognition granted by the state Senate, is a significant tribute to civilians who have made outstanding contributions.
Skoufis states that three of our neighbors and their families are able to celebrate the holiday season together because of his selflessness.
Mike Contaxis, the fire chief of Colomba, expressed his appreciation for the valuable contribution made by the Warwick native who joined the department as a volunteer back in 2006.
Contaxis expresses his gratitude towards Kevin, commending him for his exceptional courage. Colomba remains humble despite the recognition.
“I don’t see myself as a hero or someone extraordinary,” Colomba admits. “I’m simply doing what I believe is necessary.”
Other individuals present at the scene on Route 17A, including an off-duty nurse, also provided assistance, according to Colomba.According to him, the victims have personally reached out to express their gratitude.
