New Orleans— The Metropolitan Crime Commission reports no homicides in New Orleans in the first 11 days of December. This 11-day streak without killing is the second longest since Hurricane Ida in 2021. In 2023, a 12-day killingless streak was the longest. Since 2022, MCC reports homicides down 19%, gunshots down 22%, carjackings down 46%, and armed robbery down 34%.
“If you can arrest someone for a property crime, a drug offense, or a felony weapons offense, you’re taking them off the street so they can’t commit a crime of violence,” said Rafael Goyeneche of the Metropolitan Crime Commission, who thinks the new New Orleans Police Department strategy is helping the decline.
Goyeneche claims that prioritizing the arrest of illegal weapons and drug users prevents them from committing violent crimes.
He says that Big Easy homicides are still higher than in 2019, 2020, and 2021, but drones and crime cameras will assist the police continue to improve in 2024. He also believes governor-elect Jeff Landry’s promise to add Louisiana State Police patrols to the city following his January 2024 inauguration will assist.
