Health Department Advises Caution Regarding Consumption Of Molasses And Jam

Mocobizscene- The California Department of Public Health has warned consumers in Southern California about consuming Shemshad’s Mulberry Molasses and Mulberry Jam jarred food products due to contamination concerns. Individuals are advised to refrain from consuming these products.

According to a statement from the department, the food products were sold at various local grocery stores, including Woodland Hills Market in Woodland Hills, Q Market in Van Nuys, and Wholesome Choice Market in Irvine.

State health officials have issued a warning regarding certain products that were not produced under the supervision of the health department’s cannery program. These products have a higher risk of being contaminated with clostridium botulinum. It is important to note that consuming jarred and canned foods that have been improperly processed and contain botulism toxin can result in severe illness and even death.

According to the health department, Shemshad, a company based in Los Angeles, has not yet taken voluntary action to recall its Mulberry Molasses and Mulberry Jam products.

Shemshad refrained from making an immediate comment on the matter.

The product comes under the brand name Shemshad and is packaged in 16-ounce glass jars with screw-on metal lids. The jars are dated “APR 25 2025.”

The California Department of Public Health has issued a violation notice to Shemshad, stating that the company may face further action, including revoking its license.

According to health officials, individuals who have been exposed to the botulism toxin commonly exhibit initial symptoms such as double or blurred vision, drooping eyelids, and a dry or sore throat. Other symptoms that may manifest include slurred speech, difficulty swallowing, the inability of the neck muscles to support the head, paralysis of the extremities, and respiratory muscle weakness.
