Free Laptops Being Offered to Low-Income Residents in LA County

According to the U.S. Census, approximately 180,000 households in Los Angeles County do not have a computer. While computers are an essential part of life, they can also be quite expensive and inaccessible for many individuals.

Los Angeles County is taking steps to bridge the “digital divide” by providing free laptops to individuals in need.

The county’s Delete the Divide initiative is focused on bridging the gap in internet access, particularly in low-income communities with more than 20% of households lacking internet service. The initiative aims to empower residents in these communities by providing them with the necessary tools and resources to navigate modern technology and access vital municipal and social services online.

Selwyn Hollins, the director of the county’s Internal Services Department, which oversees the program, emphasized the importance of connectivity in today’s digital age. “It is crucial for individuals to be able to connect with others and acquire keyboarding skills. Access to websites and online resources is vital for carrying out daily activities,” he stated.

The laptops provided by Hollins are refurbished and equipped with Windows 10 Pro. Additionally, they come with up to one year of technical support. The funding for these devices was approved by the L.A. County Board of Supervisors and came from the county’s general fund.

Throughout the year, a significant number of the 1,800 laptops have already been distributed at various events. The upcoming event on Thursday, Dec. 21, will offer an opportunity to receive 50 laptops on a first come, first serve basis from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. This event marks the grand opening of the new Carson Library.

In order to be eligible for the event, you need to reside in L.A. County and fill out a needs assessment form at the venue. Additionally, the organizers will be giving out swag bags containing details about federal and state internet discounts, as well as other supportive services.

Additionally, by the end of the year, laptops will be provided to 1,000 veterans who have pre-registered.

According to Hollins, the county has announced its intention to distribute 7,500 brand-new laptops in 2024. This initiative is made possible through funding from the American Rescue Plan Act and a grant from the California Public Utilities Commission.
