Mocobizscene- A corruption probe conducted by the Indiana State Police has led to additional charges being filed against a former influential figure in the state’s Republican party and former sheriff of southern Indiana.
Jamey Noel, the former sheriff of Clark County, and his wife Misty are expected to appear in court Monday afternoon to answer to charges of theft and tax evasion. They both face 10 counts of each offense. In addition to the 15 existing charges, Noel is now facing additional charges for theft, corruption, ghost employment, official misconduct, and obstruction of justice.
According to state police investigators, Noel has been accused of using county employees to carry out work on his personal property. Additionally, he allegedly offered these employees the opportunity to purchase public vehicles at discounted prices.
He is suspected of incurring $5 million in personal expenses using a credit card that belonged to one of the several fire and EMS departments he managed in southern Indiana.
He is believed to have bought and owned over 100 vehicles, which included public safety vehicles, a 1930 Ford Roadster, pick-up trucks, luxury cars, and two classic 1970s Plymouth Road Runners. One of the Road Runners had a Noel campaign sticker on its back window.
In the ISP’s lot, there was another classic black-and-white Plymouth police car featuring a “Noel for Sheriff” logo on the passenger-side door. The words “To protect and serve” were also proudly displayed.
Approximately thirty-six of these vehicles are currently secured within a fenced area, covered with car covers and crime scene tape. These vehicles are being held as evidence at the ISP District 52 Post, located on the east side of Indianapolis.
During the investigation, it was discovered that Noel had acquired multiple military surplus items, equipped a fleet of sheriff’s air vehicles, and reportedly used taxpayer-funded fuel for his personal airplane.
Noel has entered a plea of not guilty in response to the charges filed by a special prosecutor.
