NORFOLK– The death certificate of Kenny Oakey is in the possession of his family, who do not accept the explanations offered for his circumstances. On September 30, Oakey, a machinist at Colonna’s Shipyard, had been employed there for around three months. At that point, he was admitted to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital after suffering several serious injuries.
The most severe one involved severe brain injury.
In an interview with 10 On Your Side on Monday afternoon, brother Roy Oakey said, “They told us that they had to operate on his brain on two spots, and (the surgeon) said he’s never had to operate on somebody’s brain in two spots.” “That’s not something he’s ever done before.”
In addition, he suffered from injuries on his neck, back, and chest, two spine fractures, a crushed collarbone, and eleven broken ribs.
According to his death certificate, Kenny Oakey suffered a blunt force injury after falling off a ladder.
However, his brother disputes that, claiming the family has been given other justifications.
According to one account, Roy Oakey stated, “They found him responsive, laying on the barge by himself.” “It was said that he went from a ladder.
However, he feels that there are too many and too severe injuries. Roy Oakey remarked, “There’s no way he fell from a five or seven foot ladder.” “Someone said they dropped a piece of equipment on top of him while they were moving it out of the water.”
Colonna’s did not reply to our messages requesting commentary.
Our team of investigators discovered that on October 2, two days following Kenny Oakey’s passing, OSHA recorded a safety check at Colonna’s Shipyard. The notification references an incident and states that the matter is still pending, but it provides no other information.
Roy Oakey declared, “I want the truth to be revealed.” “I am aware that our brother cannot return. We will need a considerable amount of time to move past this.
The family’s lawyer has stated that he is in contact with Colonna’s counsel and is trying to find out the truth about what actually transpired.
