Calls For Justice In The LASD Shooting Death Of A 27-Year-Old Lancaster Mother By Community Leaders

Mocobizscene-Community activists are demanding justice and a thorough, transparent investigation into the tragic death of a 27-year-old woman. A deputy in Lancaster fatally shot her after seeking help in a domestic dispute.

Niani Finlayson lost her life on December 4th when deputies were called to an apartment in the 2100 block of East Avenue J-8 in Lancaster, in response to a domestic violence incident, as reported by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

The audio recording captured the distressed voice of a woman urgently seeking help from the police. “Yes! Hello. I need the police here. This man, he won’t get out of my house now,” she exclaimed.

On Monday, numerous community groups united in their call for answers regarding the shooting incident. Bishop V. Jesse Smith of the African American Leadership Coalition expressed his view on the incident, referring to it as an unjustified shooting that could have been de-escalated and prevented entirely.

During Monday’s press conference, a community member stated that the Taser was passed between deputies, but it was not utilized at any point.

The family of a woman who was fatally shot by a Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy earlier this month has initiated legal proceedings against the department and county, seeking $30 million in damages.

Activists are demanding accountability and change in the policies of the sheriff’s department when it comes to domestic violence incidents.

Sheriff Robert Luna stated that the release of the footage was done ahead of schedule to showcase their dedication to transparency and provide a visual representation of the facts in this case. He emphasized that as the thorough review process progresses, the department aims to gain further understanding of the incident in order to enhance public safety.

Community activists are calling for the termination of the deputy responsible for the death of Finlayson. Pastor Brian Johnson emphasized that the goal is not to eliminate law enforcement but rather to ensure that we have effective and accountable law enforcement in place. He acknowledged the importance of their role and the need for their presence in our communities.
