DC mother tragically loses second child in shooting incident

Mocobizscene- A grieving mother in Washington, D.C., is mourning the tragic loss of her second child to gun violence.

Malik Gliss, aged 31, was fatally shot in his residence located in the Congress Heights neighborhood last week. Tragically, this incident echoes the loss of his sister, Tamara Gliss, who was killed eight years ago during a cookout near her dwelling in Shaw.

Sandra Gliss, their mother, tearfully expressed her grief, saying, “They have taken another precious soul – my child.”

“I simply fainted,” she explained. She exclaimed, “Oh no, not again! I can’t bear to experience this all over again.”

Her son attempted to console her after the passing of her daughter. Sandra Gliss shared a heartwarming anecdote about her son, Malik, reassuring her, saying, “Mom, you’ll never have to worry about that again.” Today, she reflects on how those words have come true in her life.

Malik Gliss participated in a violence prevention program in 2022. According to his mother, he underwent a significant transformation in his behavior and mindset. He secured his own apartment, found employment, and devoted his attention to caring for his three children.

His mother expressed her pride in him, as she mentioned, “He had his stuff together.” The interim director of the D.C. Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement referred to him as a living testament – someone who had personally experienced the impact of violence and now desired to become a violence interrupter.

“He had found the right path. He was creating an impact, and his impact was deeply felt by all of us,” expressed Kwelli Sneed. Authorities have not made any immediate arrests in the case, and they have not released any information regarding a motive.

The murder case of Tamara Gliss was officially closed in 2016 following the death of the individual identified by the police as the primary suspect. Sandra Gliss is finding solace in her faith as she navigates through another heartbreaking loss. In order to honor their loved one, the family has organized a vigil on Friday, followed by a funeral ceremony on February 10th.

“We need to do better as a community. We really do,” she emphasized.
