Mocobizscene- During a press conference, the police, along with Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg and Bronx DA Darcel Clark, celebrated the successful arrest of a suspect in a cold case using the innovative method of Investigative Genetic Genealogy. This technique involves analyzing DNA from crime scene samples and comparing them with consumer genealogy databases to identify potential matches with individuals who have consented to assist law enforcement.
Investigators in Florida successfully tracked down Jancys Santiago, 48, thanks to the profile. They were able to recover a DNA sample from Santiago by retrieving a discarded water bottle. It was a match after comparing the DNA from the crime scenes 20 years ago.
“After years of waiting, we are finally bringing justice to two courageous women who survived horrifying attacks,” Clark expressed. “Our victim in the Bronx has been patiently awaiting the capture of her alleged rapist for over two decades. I am grateful to the Manhattan DA’s Office, the NYPD, and my Forensic Science Unit for their unwavering dedication in assisting these women. The utilization of Investigative Genetic Genealogy will not only aid in solving various cold cases, including but not limited to murders, but also in holding perpetrators accountable. Additionally, it will play a crucial role in identifying our unidentified homicide victims, providing closure to their grieving relatives.”
“DNA has proven to be an immensely powerful tool in solving cold cases and ensuring justice for survivors, even many years after a crime has occurred,” Bragg emphasized. He expressed gratitude to the Bronx D.A.’s Office, the NYPD, and the prosecutors in his office for their unwavering commitment in seeking answers and holding perpetrators accountable. Bragg also commended their efforts in prioritizing the well-being and needs of survivors throughout the investigation process.
Police Commissioner Edward Caban praised the skilled dedication of the NYPD forensic genetic genealogist, investigators, and criminologists, as well as the chief medical examiner and everyone involved in the cases from the Manhattan and Bronx district attorneys’ offices. He emphasized that these indictments prove that the best detectives in the world never forget victims and are committed to ensuring justice is served, regardless of the passage of time.
