A mother’s plea to parents following the accidental shooting of her 7-year-old son

Mocobizscene- Asia Deberry cherishes her children more than anything else in the world. Her three children are the driving force behind everything she does, according to the devoted mother. Deberry stated that she immediately switched into doctor mode, completely disregarding her role as a mother in that moment.

Deberry remained tight-lipped about the exact circumstances surrounding the accidental shooting, simply stating that she was present at home when it occurred.

Deberry expressed his strong belief that no one should experience the same fear and pain that he went through. He emphasized the importance of gun owners securely storing their firearms, regardless of whether they are registered or not, in order to keep them out of the reach of children and prevent any potential harm.

Deberry recounts her heroic efforts to save her baby, doing everything in her power to ensure his survival until medical professionals could arrive.

“He’s truly a miracle,” Deberry exclaims, clutching a cherished photo of her son in front of Riley Hospital for Children.

Deberry expresses immense gratitude that her son is alive and able to share a message with other parents. Her son has been receiving care at Riley since the incident occurred a week ago.

Deberry strongly recommends that parents of young children take precautions by using a gun box or safety lock to ensure the safety of their household.

Two youth organizations are actively working together to prevent the same thing. The Marion County Commission on Youth and the Marion County Youth Violence Prevention Coalition are collaborating to offer free gun lock boxes to individuals who are interested in obtaining one.

According to Rebecca McCracken from the Marion County Youth Violence Prevention Coalition, individuals who own firearms can take several proactive measures to ensure safety within their homes. Accidental shootings in Indianapolis have become a major concern. Accidental non-fatal shooting numbers in Indianapolis saw a significant increase last year, according to data from IMPD. The figures reveal that these incidents more than tripled compared to the previous year.

Riley Hospital also experienced an increase in their numbers. Below are the statistics for gunshot wounds (GSW) treated at their facility:

    • 2023: 38 violent, 16 accidental/unintentional
    • 2022: 32 violent, 9 accidental/unintentional
    • 2021: 38 violent, 17 accidental.unintentional
    • 2020: 27 violent, 17 accidental/unintentional
    • 2019: 32 violent, 5 accidental/unintentional
    • 2018: 21 violent, 8 accidental/unintentional

Deberry urges parents to take proactive measures to prevent incidents like these. To obtain a gun lock, all they need to do is complete a survey at the Marion County Commission on Youth.
