Mocobizscene- New Orleans broke its streak of 13 homicide-free days on Wednesday night (Dec. 13) when a shooting occurred at the intersection of Alcee Fortier Boulevard and Chef Menteur Highway.
The New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) reported the incident at approximately 7:24 p.m. They confirmed the incident just seven minutes later. As a result of the shooting, a male individual sustained a gunshot wound.
After a stretch of tranquility in the aftermath of Hurricane Ida, the city’s streak of non-violence was shattered by this incident, which resulted in its first homicide in more than a week. According to data from the Metropolitan Crime Commission, there have been 213 homicides so far this year, marking a significant 18.7% decrease compared to the 262 reported during the same period last year.
The number of murders in 2022 and 2023 remains higher than the five-year low of 113 homicides recorded in 2019, despite the progress made.
