According to police, a 30-year-old man was fatally shot inside a Harlem bodega and smoke shop on Sunday night. Jazeke Samuels, the victim, was discovered inside Legend’s Exotic Candy Shop at 300 West 142 Street with a gunshot wound to the torso and left arm. Officers made the grim discovery at around 6:10 p.m., according to the NYPD.
Surveillance video obtained shows that the gunman shot Samuels while he was working behind the counter.
The man from Harlem was rushed to NYC Health + Hospital-Metropolitan where he was declared deceased.
The store where the shooting took place was identified by the police as a bodega, although sources within the police department revealed that it also functioned as an unlicensed smoke shop. These unlicensed smoke shops, which often operate as cash businesses, have become frequent targets for violent and sometimes fatal robberies throughout the city.
The motive behind Sunday’s shooting remains unclear, leaving uncertainty as to whether it was a failed robbery or driven by other reasons. According to the authorities, the investigation is still in progress and no arrests have been made at this time.
