14-year-old boys fatally shot & killed after witnesses observed them attempting to steal a Hyundai

Two 14-year-old boys were observed on the South Side yesterday afternoon attempting to steal a vehicle moments before they were fatally shot.

The boys were discovered with gunshot wounds in an alley behind the 800 block of East 89th Place at approximately 2:27 p.m., according to Chicago police. Both individuals were declared deceased at the location.

According to CPD dispatch logs, moments earlier, someone dialed 911 to report that four individuals were attempting to steal a vehicle from an alley behind the same block.

Four young men, two of whom were slain and two of whom fled, were attempting to steal a gray Hyundai, according to information provided to police by witnesses.

Additionally, a man who purported to be the owner of the vehicle spoke with the police. He stated that the lads fled when he emerged from the building, according to one officer. Later, the police determined that the vehicle’s registration belonged to a different resident of the same address.

The auto larceny was not mentioned in the brief CPD media statement regarding the shootings. Sunday afternoon, the department did report that no one was in custody.

Due to design faults in certain Hyundai and Kia automobiles, thieves can steal the vehicles by using a USB plug as the ignition key. Despite the manufacturers’ implementation of software updates intended to rectify the problem, the vehicles remain susceptible to widespread theft.

A Chicagoan was fatally shot last month for deterring two alleged “Kia Boys” from stealing a Hyundai from the 700 block of North Loomis. In that circumstance, no arrests have been documented.
