Mocobizscene- Luis Peroza, 40, was given the opportunity by a Manhattan Supreme Court judge to address the court before being sentenced to 10 years in prison for assaulting Ray Alvarez, the beloved owner of the candy shop, and two other men on January 31, 2023. A transgender teenager, who had plotted mass shootings at a school and a church and had even written a chilling manifesto, has been sentenced to six years in prison. In June 2023, Gerald Barth, who was identified as a second suspect in the attacks, was deemed unfit to stand trial. Consequently, he was transferred from Rikers Island and placed under the custody of the state’s Office of Mental Health.

In 1974, Alvarez, the owner of Ray’s Candy Store, expressed his fear for his life after being hit with a belt that had a stone on one end. The resilient owner mentioned that he was back at it the following morning, serving up his renowned egg creams and delectable sweets. He explained that he had received an ice cream delivery, which motivated him to keep going.

Alvarez shared that he has been working here for 49 years and has only had one day off.

“In a statement, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg emphasized that Luis Peroza has been held responsible for the brutal assault of three individuals within a single day.”

“I believe that the sentencing will provide a much-needed sense of justice and relief for all the victims,” expressed Bragg.
