Police in Montgomery urge the public to remain patient during hate crime inquiry

Over the weekend, Black families woke up to find racial slurs and swastikas sprayed on their cars and homes. The Montgomery Police Department has teamed up with federal partners to investigate this heinous crime and identify any federal offences that may have been committed.

Maj. Saba Coleman stated in an email that the community’s cooperation and patience are greatly appreciated during this time. The MPD is taking the necessary steps to handle the situation and will keep the public informed of any developments in the case.

According to the authorities, the incident is being investigated as a hate crime by the police.

In an email, Coleman stated that they are investigating the act as a hate crime violation and will gather all necessary information to create a comprehensive report to present to their federal partners.

On Tuesday evening, a group of approximately 10 individuals gathered at Dannelly Pines Park, which is located near the site where the vandalism took place. The purpose of their gathering was to discuss the incident and its impact on the community.

At the meeting, Karen Jones, a prominent community leader, expressed her disappointment with the police department and presented a series of demands to the city officials. Her frustrations were evident as she passionately voiced her concerns.

Over the weekend, a vandal committed a crime by spray-painting several houses and cars in the Richardson Road and Dan River Road neighbourhood. Among the affected families were Otis and Katrice Ramos, whose home was also vandalized on Saturday.

Katrice Ramos reported on Tuesday that her car was the target of an attempted arson attack. Her daughter was the first to discover the incident when she opened the car door before school and was met with a cloud of smoke in her face. The young girl quickly informed her parents, who then contacted the police for assistance.

According to Jones, the racial tensions in America have reached an alarming level, and simply ignoring the issue will not make it disappear.

According to Jones, the lack of response from Mayor Steven Reed and Chief Darryl Albert regarding the issue is highly concerning. Jones finds the entire situation to be exceptionally abhorrent and malicious. She believes that the mayor’s silence on this matter is deafening and is an indication of his disinterest in addressing the issue. Jones expresses her disappointment and frustration with the lack of action taken by the authorities on this matter.

According to Jones, the Black community must take charge of protecting their own neighbourhoods since the police have proven incapable of doing so. Additionally, she appealed to elected officials to take responsibility for the destruction caused to people’s homes and vehicles during the recent acts of vandalism.

Jones stated that there are only two possible outcomes – justice or something else. He clarified that the interpretation of the word ‘else’ could differ from person to person.
