Two apartment complexes on Woodley Road in Montgomery are facing legal action due to allegations of forcing tenants to live in unsafe and poor conditions. The property owners are now required to take responsibility for their actions.
Residents of Woodley Gardens and Woodley Terrace have been complaining about unlivable conditions in their complexes, prompting a city review. At a recent City Council meeting, the council unanimously voted to take legal action against the properties in question.
Cameisha Whetstone, a tenant at Woodley Gardens, expressed her frustration to the City Council stating that there has been no hot water in their building for more than three weeks.
According to Woodley Gardens tenants, the management has sent a letter threatening to terminate their lease if they report any issues to the city. The letter specifically mentioned that the hot water pipes were “tampered with”.
Additionally, it was reported that the bathrooms were experiencing issues with feces backing up.
WSFA 12 News received photos from District 6 Councilman Oronde Mitchell showcasing broken staircases and neglected units at Woodley Terrace during his recent visit.
During Tuesday’s meeting, Mitchell took charge of the movement to hold property owners responsible for maintaining livable conditions for tenants. He highlighted that the two apartment complexes lacked permits to operate as businesses.
During the meeting, Mitchell revealed that a business license had been granted to Woodley Gardens. He expressed his belief that if they had not been called to a review, they would not have received the license.
The City Council review was attended by none of the property owners.
