On March 30, 2016, the tranquil atmosphere of the Secane neighborhood in New Orleans, Louisiana was shattered by the sudden disappearance of 36-year-old Markia Benson. Markia, who worked at SIG Shipping & Packing, failed to show up for her regular shift, causing worry for her boyfriend and a colleague. Concerned for her safety, they went to her apartment at the New Orleans Park apartments on South Avenue to check on her.
Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood described the nature of the crime scene as indicative of a personal vendetta. The violence inflicted upon Markia was so intense that words like “hatred,” “vengeance,” and “sadistic” were used to describe the motive of the perpetrator. Although there were suspicions that she was killed by someone she knew, the case remains unsolved, and no individual has been held accountable for the heinous act.
