A debate over youth curfews allows young people to express their opinions

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – On Wednesday night, there will be a debate-style talk about the idea of putting a curfew on young people in Montgomery. The name of this event is the “Community Youth Debate.” The goal is to give young people a chance to say what they think about a limit that would affect them directly.

Last week, Montgomery City Councilwoman Marche Johnson said she plans to bring a suggested curfew ordinance to a committee. This comes after a string of crimes involving teenagers and children, such as a break-in at the Montgomery Crisis Center and an 8-year-old who stole a car at gunpoint. People under 17 would have to follow the curfew, and there would be different ones for school nights, weekends, and holidays.

Johnson, Montgomery Police Chief Darryl Albert, and other community leaders will likely be at the meeting on Wednesday. The group that runs it is called “Destiny Driven.”

Tonight at 5:30, the “Community Youth Debate” will begin at the New Covenant Church of the Living, which is at 1506 Madison Ave.
