police said: a man in north Alabama set fire to his wife

A man from Decatur is being charged with domestic violence, assault, and burning in the first degree after police say he set fire to his wife and apartment early Tuesday morning.

Riley Herbert Willis III, who is 40 years old, is being held in the Morgan County Jail without bond, according to police in Decatur.

At about 3:30 a.m., the cops were called to the Summer Courtyard Apartments at 2216 Acadia Drive S.W., where there was a fight. In response to a person who had been burned, Decatur Fire and Rescue and Decatur-Morgan EMS also came.

They found a woman with “serious physical injuries,” including burns. Investigators found that Willis set fire to his wife and then used an accelerant to set fire to their apartment. He then escaped through a back window to avoid being seen.

Willis was hiding in another apartment in the building, where the police found him.

The woman who sustained injuries was taken to UAB Hospital, where she is in extremely poor condition.
