Albert Smith, a 21-year-old, was found by officers from the Metropolitan Police Department on Sunday, June 14. He had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was immediately taken to an area hospital. However, despite the efforts of medical professionals, he succumbed to his injuries and passed away.
Hailing from Tennessee, the young rapper was making a name for himself in the Southern music scene. He made a trip to Washington DC with a group of seven friends to visit some acquaintances, who unfortunately turned out to be the very individuals accused of taking his life.
The Department of Justice made an announcement in July about the indictment of five individuals on multiple offenses. These individuals include Temple Hills resident Johnny Wilkins (34), Marcel Gavin (31), Kharee Jackson (30), Earl Robinson (31), and Darryl Little, all of Washington, DC. The indictment consists of 20 counts.
Charges in the initial indictment include:
- Conspiracy,
- Three counts of first-degree murder while armed;
- Premeditated first-degree murder while armed;
- Assault with intent to kill while armed;
- Three counts of robbery while armed;
- Assault with significant bodily injury while armed;
- Possession of a firearm with a prior conviction (Wilkins);
- Nine counts of possession of a firearm during a crime of violence.
In March of 2022, Wilkins and another suspect were taken into custody.
The Metropolitan Police Department made an announcement on Thursday, Sept. 14, revealing that Jackson and Robinson were apprehended and charged with first-degree murder while armed.
As per the findings of the federal investigators, Smith had visited his acquaintances, who later turned out to be his alleged killers, on June 13, 2020. That night, he checked into his hotel and headed to Congress Park where he indulged in gambling for hours on end, wagering tens of thousands of dollars.
According to reports, it is believed that the accused individuals attacked Smith and his companions following their gambling session. It is said that Wilkins pursued Smith and his group down Congress Street while shooting at them.
Smith was murdered, another member of his group was shot, and two more victims were pistol whipped and robbed of about $20,000 by four guys.
