In the bustling streets of New York, it’s no secret that drivers can get a bit hot-headed, often honking and cursing at one another. Recently, two brothers were taken into custody after they allegedly obstructed a side street with their van and then proceeded to attack an off-duty police officer. The altercation escalated quickly, resulting in a struggle for the officer’s gun and ultimately leading to gunshots being fired, injuring one of the brothers and the officer.
According to reports, one of the siblings supposedly broke the back window of an unnamed 26-year-old officer near Queens Boulevard and 70th Street in Queens. The officer quickly responded by calling 911 and drawing his handgun to hold the suspects accountable while informing them that they were being apprehended.
As per police reports, just before the altercation, the off-duty officer encountered a white van obstructing the eastbound service road adjacent to Queens Boulevard. The officer engaged in a short argument with the driver before manoeuvring around the obstruction and continuing on his way.
During a news briefing, NYPD Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey revealed that despite being stopped by the officer, the driver continued the argument and even followed the officer to the next stoplight. Meanwhile, the passenger, who was the driver’s brother, allegedly punched through the officer’s rear windshield.

In Queens, New York, a possible road rage incident ended in a shooting, prompting the response of police officers and paramedics. During the altercation, an off-duty NYPD officer sustained a gunshot wound to the leg, while one of the suspects was hit in the hand. According to Maddrey, the off-duty MOS stepped out of his vehicle, identified himself as a police officer, and brandished his firearm towards the two males. He then declared that one of the males was being apprehended for breaking his window. While holding the suspects at gunpoint, the off-duty officer was also attempting to contact 911.
As depicted in the video, the officer was holding his phone to his ear with one hand while the other hand firmly gripped his handgun. He maintained a safe distance from the individuals and made every effort to keep the situation under control as they engaged in a heated exchange.
In a video captured by an eyewitness, the officer is heard instructing two men to get on the ground. The officer identifies himself as a police officer. The footage is grainy, but the exchange is clear.
According to Peter Gerber, during a heated argument, one of the suspects reportedly broke the rear window of the officer’s vehicle.
One of the men replied, “That doesn’t mean anything.”
At one point, the suspect barks, “I’m tougher than you.”
As the situation unfolds, one of the bystanders confidently instructs the others, “Let’s hold him until the police arrive.”

As the trio grappled on the ground, a sudden gunshot rang out, followed by another shortly after. According to Maddrey, one of the suspects attempted to seize the firearm, resulting in a struggle between the officer and the suspects. Despite all three men tumbling to the ground, the suspects managed to overpower the officer, causing one of them to flee after the first gunshot. The other suspect remained and continued to engage in combat.

According to Maddrey, the male suspect had successfully pinned down their officer, leaving the officer motionless beneath him.
The gunfire hit both the officer and Edwin Rivera, who is 32 years old. One bullet struck the officer, while the other hit Rivera.
A few seconds later, police officers in uniform swiftly make their way into the scene.
Authorities have reported that both the officer and the older Rivera sibling are currently receiving medical treatment in a hospital and are in stable condition.
According to the authorities, both brothers, who are residents of New York City, have criminal records.
