In just a matter of hours, the forecast for October can change drastically. A recent example of this is the Buffalo area’s experience with the October Surprise Storm. With the cooler air now upon us, rain is also making an appearance.
According to some predictions, the Great Lakes could potentially provide some much-needed rainfall to the surrounding regions. In fact, there are indications that areas in Western New York could receive up to 2 inches of rain on Monday and Tuesday. If this comes to fruition, it would be the equivalent of a significant snowfall!
Low pressure will continue to direct a chilly airmass across the region, with lake effect rain showers, which may be locally heavy along Lake Erie shore tonight through Tuesday night. #NYwx #fall #Lakeeffect pic.twitter.com/XBpXWOxvVR

The Lake Storm Aphid
Do you remember the “October Surprise” storm that hit Western New York a few years ago? I’m sure most of us who experienced it recall the havoc it wreaked with its heavy, wet snow.
What Was Its Name?
It’s interesting to learn that the storm which is famously known as the October Surprise actually has an official name given by the National Weather Service. According to sources, the storm was named as Lake Storm Aphid. It’s fascinating to realize that sometimes we only know things by their popular names and not their official designations.
The National Weather Service office in Buffalo named the snowstorm that hit the area during October as Lake Storm Aphid, following their naming scheme for lake-effect snowstorms that year based on insects. However, the locals in the area never used that terminology and preferred to refer to it as the October Surprise.
The Current State of Affairs
As we come closer to the 15th anniversary of that tempestuous event, we find ourselves basking under the warm rays of the sun here in Buffalo, with the mercury set to touch 85 degrees!
Preparing Your Snowblower for Winter: A Guide
It’s no secret what’s coming next. The pleasant warmth in the air will soon be replaced by chilly winds. Failing to prepare in advance will undoubtedly lead to being caught off guard. To stay ahead of the game, make sure to have a snow brush in your car or truck, and start considering snow tires and shovels. Being prepared for the worst is always a good idea.
Enjoy the unseasonably warm weather expected on Wednesday! 80s+ expected and record-breaking temperatures likely for some. But expect an abrupt cooling trend by this weekend, so make sure to take advantage of the mid-week warmth! #NYwx pic.twitter.com/aFTzEVCpdC
